Blue Jays shortstop Ryan Goins had a plate appearance in today’s fifth inning that combined the fright of nearly being hit in the head with the disappointment of an ordinary groundout. Fun!
The pitch from Fernando Abad was high and inside, but it didn’t hit Goins—it hit the handle of his bat as he tried to check his swing. The ball bounced onto the infield, where Abad grabbed it to toss to Hanley Ramirez over at first base, thereby recording the out while Goins was still laid out at the plate:
Here’s a close-up of the hit itself, undoubtedly (and literally) a low point for Goins on a day where he drove in two as part of an 8-6 Blue Jays win over the Red Sox:
