After two packed editions at the Underground, Lekki; the former pop-up show moved to a new, bigger venue at AAF, Isiola Oyekan, Victoria Island.
It would appear that the emerging sounds of the underground scene are earning more fans, and they are off the variety that is willing to turn out for a night of vibes and energy.
A month after a Special edition at the Underground, beside BLD, Admiralty Way, Lekki Phase 1, August’s 90s Baby SoundOff brought out Lady Donli, crowd-favorite Tomi Thomas and one of the primary architects of the new sounds, Grand Master King.
A star-studded night was opened by artists like Frosty and Shakes, the latter of whom was first to draw energy from the audience.
Over the past few months, the bill at the Sound Off has gradually grown more inviting; the introduction of artists like D.O and Ajebutter 22 was a major part of the experience at the last edition and galdly, the trend continued this month.
Fresh off pulling off a vibe at the “Wallflower Experience” in Abuja, Lady Donli performed at the Sound Off for the first time. Fans were treated to an original rendition of “Kashe Ni” and “Be Free” before Tomi Thomas joined her for the song of the summer on this side, “Ice Cream”.
There is little to contest in producer GMK’s ability to craft sounds but recently, the Monster Boy has pushed his abilities into rapped verses and stand-out songs like “Wasteman”. He performed this as well as a verse off “Adara” with Fasina, who despite technical issues, pulled off a great set.
Co-founder of the 90's Baby brand, Idris King got the crowd on his side with his newest release, “Cruise” and a collector’s gem for fans of the bilingual rapper, “Came Like a Hurricane”.
Event regulars, Jazzz Atta, BarelyAnyHook and Oma Mahmud also turned the heat up in their time on (and off) the stage,
Two of the biggest names on the bill were DMW rapper, Dremo and ‘new’ Mavin Records Signee, Poe.
Dremo was the first of the two to go at it, and his set was a session with the fans who ran through his spitfire verses with him word-for-word. The rapper performed “Who” and “Ojere”.
Poe also took the stage much later to the delight of fans who have rarely seen the wordsmith out over the summer holidays.
Other performers include Famous Bobson, Maka with a deeply soulful set and Wavy the Creator.
For anyone who is a regular fan of the culture-defining show, this edition of 90s baby Sound Off lived beyond its billing. The new venue set the perfect ambiance for a night that promises more for the future.
