Odunayo lost to her Japanese counterpart 5-4 to win the silver medal, Nigeria’s first in the World Championship.
Ondo State-born wrestler Adekuoroye Odunayo has become the first Nigerian to compete in the final of the World Championship, winning silver in Paris.
Odunayo on Wednesday, August 23 fought Cadet world champions Okuno Haruna of Japan in the final of the 55kg women category.

The Ondo-State born lost to her Japanese counterpart 5-4 to win the silver medal, Nigeria’s first in the World Championship.
She led in the opening minute by 1-0 but could not sustain her energy, succumbing to a 5-4 defeat.
The 23-year-old won bronze at the 2015 World Championship in Las Vegas; she was world number one in the 55kg category before the championship.
Ifeoma Iheanacho was the first Nigeria female wrestler to win a bronze medal; she won it back to back in 2009 and 2010.
Another Nigerian, Blessing Oborududu fought in the bronze medal match but lost to Colombia’s Jackeline Castillo by 7-8 points in the 63kg women category.
