There has always been a massive gulf in talent between Doc Rivers The Coach and Doc Rivers The General Manager. Coach Rivers has a career .579 winning percentage and hasn’t missed the playoffs since 2007; GM Rivers is best known for repeatedly wasting his team’s limited cap space on mediocre-to-useless bench players. But today brings good news for Clippers fans, because GM Rivers is no more.
According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, Rivers has lost his GM powers, and those duties will now belong to executive vice president of basketball operations Lawrence Frank. Clippers owner Steve Ballmer explained the decision to Woj:
“I’ve owned the team for three years now, and I really better understand what an owner’s responsibility is — and it turns out that running a franchise and coaching are two enormous and different jobs,” Ballmer told ESPN. “The notion that one person can fairly focus on them and give them all the attention they need isn’t the case. To be as good as we can be, to be a championship franchise, we need two functioning strong people building teams out beneath them. There needs to be a healthy discussion and debate with two strong, independent-minded people.”
If Frank has any stones, he’ll trade Austin Rivers tomorrow.
