In Nasarawa: House Speaker warns members against compromise

Enugu Assembly

The Speaker, Alhaji Ibrahim Balarabe-Abdullahi gave the warning on Tuesday in Lafia, during the plenary sitting of the House.

Chairmen and members of committees in the Nasarawa House of Assembly have been warned against compromising with managements of Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) while discharging their oversight functions.

Alhaji Ibrahim Balarabe-Abdullahi, the Speaker, gave the warning on Tuesday in Lafia, during the plenary sitting of the House.

“Oversight functions are a key aspect of our mandate because they offer us the opportunity to asses the deployment of resources.

“They also offer us the opportunity to ensure managerial prudence in the overall interest of the general public,” he said.

He said that oversight functions were not a witch hunt but a constitutional responsibility that would enable law makers assess performance of those in charge of service delivery.

Balarabe-Abdullahi, who gave all committees one month to assess the performance of the 2017 budget, urged his colleagues to be strict with the MDAs so as to ensure optimal performance.

Earlier, Mr Tanko Tunga (Awe/APC), the House’s Majority Leader, had urged the Speaker to adjourn sitting to allow law makers to embark on oversight functions to MDAs.

He said that the constitutional responsibility was crucial to checking the activities of MDAs in the interest of the masses.
