Lifestyle: Murtala Mohammed International Airport is the only airport seeing declines in both domestic and international traffic in Africa, says report

Poor state of facilities at the Lagos international airport has negatively impacted on use by travellers for both local and international flights.

According to travel data by Forward Keys, Murtala Mohammed International Airport experienced a decline in  number of passengers making it the only airport in Africa with such a record in H1 2017.

This situation was adduced to the reduction in flight operations and coverage of Nigeria’s biggest airline, Arik Air in 2017 as well as poor air travel facilities at the airport .

However, the Jomo Kenyatta international Airport made impressive improvement in travellers’ flight numbers. The domestic air travel recorded 22% growth in H1 2017, making it the best in Africa for the period.

Kenya is followed by Tunis (14%) and Addis Ababa (9%). Also, the international flights to Kenya grew by 8% making within the same period.

Travelers’ attraction to Kenya’s airport was attributed to the improved facilities at the port as well as the flourishing domestic tourism industry in Kenya.

Kenya’s tourist centres are also main destinations for fun lovers and holiday travellers within the Africa. Relaxed visa regulations also triggered growth in the inter-African travels to the country.

Earlier in the week, Nigeria government announced the plan to hand over the management of the troubled Arik Air to Ethiopian Airline. This is towards optimizing the operations of the company.
