Shadow Art: Street artist paints fake shadows to confuse passersby

California based graphic artist, Damon Belanger, paints fake shadows of objects in Redwood city to trick passersby.

California-based creative Damon Belanger is taking over Redwood City, California with his tricky shadow art.

From shadows of smiling flowers, robots, and monkeys, among other characters, poking out from bike racks, parking meters, fences, mailboxes turning into shadow monsters, Belanger gives ordinary objects silly and shocking shadows that will have any passerby look twice at a glance of these strange looking shadows.

 

Graphic artist Belanger, who was commissioned by The Redwood City Improvement Association to adorn the downtown area of Redwood City in order to bring more creativity to the area, with 20 fanciful public pieces, has transformed the seemingly ordinary city into a whimsical wonderland with his "shadow" painting series.

 

“The shadows give regular mundane objects a lively spirit so people can have a little fun in their everyday life.,” he said. "It's more fun when you come around a corner and see an unexpected monster pop up on the sidewalk."

 

To create each of these shadow pieces, Belanger first chooses the object that will cast the “shadow.” He then creates a chalk outline of a character, strategically angling it in such a way that resembles a real cast shadow and then uses dark grey paint to fill it in.

 

Belanger's shadow series in Redwood city is indeed that an artist's canvas (worksheet) can be just anything.
