Zimbabwe: Robert Mugabe gets his own national holiday

The resolution was recommended by his party

Robert Mugabe can now boast of his own public holiday after Zimbabwe’s Home Affairs Minister announced that the birthday of the president would now be marked as a holiday.

“In declaring this day, we would like to highlight to our youths the values and principles so brilliantly displayed by President R.G. Mugabe which have resulted in an exemplary life that our youths can emulate,” state-owned Herald newspaper quoted home affairs minister Ignatius Chombo as saying.

He said the cabinet made the decision after years of lobbying by the ruling party which also said it wants the country’s main airport named after Mugabe.

The day will be known as the Robert Mugabe National Youth Day and marked on February 21,the day of his birth.

The 93 year old Mugabe has led the country since independence in 1980 and has already indicated his readiness to contest another election even though there are fears over his health after several visits to Singapore for medical attention.

He recently returned from a summit in South Africa where his wife Grace had been accused of assaulting a woman found at the apartment of her sons in Johanessburg.
