England midfielder Dele Alli has been banned for one international match over his gesture during the World Cup qualifier against Slovakia earlier this month, world governing body Fifa has announced.
Alli will now miss the match against Slovenia at Wembley on Thursday, but will be available for England’s final World Cup qualifer in Lithuania on 8 October.
The Tottenham midfielder was included in Gareth Southgate’s 26-man squad ahead of the qualifying matches on Thursday, with news of a potential ban from Fifa still not confirmed.
Alli made the gesture 13 minutes from time in the 2-1 win over Slovakia, after his appeals for a free kick were waved away by referee Clément Turpin. The 21-year-old claimed after the game that the gesture was a joke, aimed at team-mate Kyle Walker.
