Ilorin, Nigeria: Corpse of man killed by lightening rejected by religious cemetery

A cemetery.

The management of the cemetery refused to accept the corpse based on a submission that his death was not an act of God.

Following a fuss over the Islamic burial rites, a cemetery in Ilorin, Kwara State has rejected the corpse of a man, Salami Adekunle who was killed by lightening.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the management of the graveyard insisted that the deceased should not undergo the regular prayers as his death is considered not an act of God.

The coordinator of the cemetery, Dr. Abubakar Aliagan reiterated this in an interview with NAN. He stated that the corpse can only be buried if the family of the dead comply with their standard.

"If the late Salami will sleep in our Muslim cemetery, we have to do it in line with lslamic rites," he said.

This development is coming as a surprise due to the fact that Adekunle, who worked at the registry department of the Kwara College of Education, Oro, was a devoted Muslim until his death.

Meanwhile, Mr. Adesola Adewoye, the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the institution has revealed that there shall be a meeting between the school and the family of the deceased in order to determine the next course.
