Polly Alakija: Artist takes the colours of Lagos to London

The Five Cowries Flotilla at the London Millennium bridge

Polly Alakija's work with Lagos school children is now being displayed as part of the Totally Thames festival in the United Kingdom.

British artist Polly Alakija is showcasing artwork comprising of elements of the bustling city of Lagos at the London Millennium Footbridge.

The installation called ‘The Five Cowries Flotilla’ is made up of six traditional wooden canoes.

This pieces were created by students who worked closely with Alakija. The exhibition of the Five Cowries Flotilla is part of the “Rivers of the World” art exhibition which is showcasing at the prestigious Thames festival in London.

 

The canoes were previously displayed in Lagos, Nigeria. The muralist’s work will be available for viewing outside the Tate modern gallery until September 26, 2017.

Earlier in the year, Alakija was commissioned by commissioned by the Lagos State government to paint the pillars under the Falomo bridge in Ikoyi. The renowned painted painted 50 women on the pillars holding up the bridge.

 

The British artist who has created artworks exhibited in galleries and auction houses in England, South Africa and Nigeria sometimes dedicates her time and skills to community art projects.

She has painted several unusual objects including cars, caravans, trucks, tankers and most recently, she painted a tricycle, a ‘molue’ bus and a ferry.
