George Weah

George Weah has won the keenly contested election in Liberia, which completed the country’s first democratic transition of power in more than 70 years.

After Liberians turned out in force on Tuesday, October 10, 2017, to choose a successor to President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, football legend, George Weah has emerged winner.

According to reports from Liberia, the keenly contested election, which completed the country’s first democratic transition of power in more than 70 years, has seen the only African World Best Player emerging winner.

With a calm day of ballot casting with long lines across the nation which gave way to counting after polls closed, the exercise capped a campaign hailed for vibrant and violence-free debates and rallies in the small West African nation.

George Weah had slugged it out with other frontrunners that include incumbent Vice President Joseph Boakai, longtime opposition figure Charles Brumskine and former Coca-Cola executive Alexander Cummings.

Congratulatory messages has been pouring on the football icon's social media pages.
