Nnamdi Kanu: 'IPOB leader has escaped to London through Malaysia'

According to former Abia Governor, Orji Uzor Kalu, Nnamdi Kanu has fled to London through Malaysia.

Former Governor of Abia State, Orji Uzor Kalu, says leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) Nnamdi Kanu, has fled to London through Malaysia.

On September 14, 2017, soldiers stormed Kanu’s Afaraukwu Umuahia residence in Abia State; as clashes between the army and IPOB members boiled over.

Kanu who was caught on tape asking his supporters to leave the compound on the day, hasn’t been seen since then.

The federal government and Kanu's lawyer have traded blames over the whereabouts of the hate spewing separatist.

 

However, former Governor Kalu says he’s been reliably informed that Kanu escaped to London through Malaysia, after the military took its 'Operation Python Dance II' to the Southeast.

“Kanu was not taken away by the military. Kanu went to Malaysia from where he travelled to the United Kingdom. Nnamdi Kanu is in London right now as we speak”, Kalu told Punch newspaper in a recent interview.

He added that “Nnamdi Kanu was not arrested by anybody. He left the country on his own. One of his relations has spoken to me and explained everything because I wanted to see him and talk to him wherever he was and see how I could meet some Federal Government officials on his issue.

 

“I also wanted to see ways of talking to the President about him, and find common ground but his family told me that he has left the country, unless they are lying to me.

“I believe, whether he had left the country or not, he is not with the military because I asked the Commander of the 14 Brigade, Brig.-Gen. A.K Ibrahim, who is a very fine and good soldier, well educated and dedicated, and he told me that they don’t know his whereabouts and I am sure, the Department of State Services have the same information.

“I also visited the commissioner of police and he said he didn’t know his whereabouts and that they are also looking for him”.

Kalu who is now a member of the governing APC, once held a meeting with the separatist Kanu.

He told Punch that his meeting with Kanu yielded very little.

“I will not tell you a lie. Nnamdi Kanu did not agree with me at all on my views about his activities. I did most of the talking throughout the two hours and ten minutes that I stayed with him.

 

“I told him many stories about life especially some of the stories that the Ikemba Nnewi (Odumegwu Ojukwu) told me when he was alive and also explained lot of things to him based on my experience in life but didn’t agree with me.

“I had to cut short my journey when I heard what was happening between his boys and the military. I returned to the country on September 14 and came straight to Abia State on the 15th to make sure that we talked to the IPOB boys so that they would stop what they were doing and allow peace to reign”.

Nnamdi Kanu is being tried by the Nigerian State for charges bordering on treason and illegal possession of firearms.

Currently on bail, Kanu is due back in court on October 17 to continue his trial.

 

The federal government has said it will be left with no choice but to arrest influential leaders who signed Kanu’s bail bond, if the separatist agitator isn’t produced in court on the next adjourned date.

Kanu has flouted all of his bail conditions.

“The implication of the failure of Kanu to appear in court on the next adjourned date on those who stood sureties for his recognizance is that his recognizance shall be forfeited”, says Chief Okoi-Obono Obla who is President Buhari’s Special Assistant on Prosecution.

“The court also may issue a warrant of arrest where a defendant (Kanu) bound by a recognizance or bond fails to appear before a court or police station. It follows that if Kanu fails to appear before the Federal High Court on the next adjourned date, the Judge will likely issue a warrant for his arrest.

 

“It follows that Kanu’s three sureties will be ordered to pay N100M each. Where sufficient cause is not shown by the sureties or the persons bound and the penalty is not paid, the court may recover the penalty from the person bound or from his estate if he is dead, in the manner laid down in the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, 2015 for the recovery of fine.

“However, where the penalty is not paid and cannot be recovered in the manner laid down by the law, the person bound shall be liable to imprisonment for a term not exceeding six months”, Obono Obla added.

The three sureties who signed Kanu’s bail bond are: Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, Jewish High Chief Priest, Immanuu-El Shalom Okabemadu and a Chartered Accountant who resides in the capital city of Abuja, Tochukwu Uchendu.
