Anambra Elections: Willie Obiano retains position as governor following INEC declaration

I’m sure I will win by a landslide - Obiano

Osita Chidoka, who came fourth with 7, 903 votes attributed Obiano's success to a huge financial power.

Willie Obiano retained his position as the governor of Anambra state following an announcement by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), yesterday, November 18, 2017.

He fend off intense competitions from Tony Nwoye of the All Progressives and the People’s Democratic Party’s Oseloka Obaze, amassing a total of 234, 071 votes from 21 local government areas in the state.

Nwoye proved to be his strongest rival with 98, 752, while Obaze managed a sum of 70, 293, far better than the United Progressive Party (UPP) Osita Chidoka, who recorded 7, 903 votes in fourth place.

The latter in a chat with The Guardian News admitted defeat but attributed the success of the winning opposition to an availability of wealth.

"We lost to superior financial firepower. As Democrats, we concede to the voters’ choices,” he began.

"The true hallmark of democracy is the respect for the voice of the ballot as that of the majority.

"But the inner truth is that we won! We won at the most important place; in the hearts of people; our people who saw us toil and push in the arena against all odds; who saw the sincerity of our mission and gave all in support of our quest for collective good. We salute you for your support and personal sacrifices to the campaign," Chidoka stated in the interview.
