Defence HQ: Military says female cadets still being trained

This is coming on the heels of reports that the military planned to stop the admission of female cadets into combatant courses.

The Defence Headquarters has issued a statement saying that female cadets are still being trained in the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA).

According to Punch, the recommendation was made to President Muhammadu Buhari by the Armed Forces Council.

Speaking on the issue, the Director of Defence Information, Major-General John Enechie described the report as the work of mischievous people.

Enechie also urged the public to disregard the report, adding that is it not authentic.

He said “The attention of the Defence Headquarters has been drawn to a news being spread in the print and online Media about stoppage of training female cadets in order to be commissioned as Regular Combatant officers into the Armed Forces of Nigeria. This is an act of disinformation to the general public by mischievous individuals. The contents of all those publications are ill intended concoctions, not authentic  and  should therefore be disregarded outrightly.

“Extantly, the provision in the terms and conditions of service for female officers of the Nigerian Military is that ‘They are eligible for all the types of Commission that are grantable to their male counterparts’, which has not changed.

“This is for tile information of the general public and female Nigerians in particular," The Cable News reports.

How it started

President Goodluck Jonathan, in 2010, ordered that females who desired to be combatant officers be admitted into the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA).

The President’s directive subsequently led to the admission of about 20 female cadets into the NDA in 2011.
