NASS Extra With Goodness: Could this be Dino Melaye's addiction?

Senator Dino Melaye

Ever wondered what keeps Senator Dino Melaye going? Worry no more.

“Mr President, this morning, I draw celestial anointing from Order ‘XYZ’ of the Senate Standing Rules.”

A typical Senator Dino Melaye line at plenary.

Love or hate him, Senator Melaye has found his way into the hearts of most Nigerians with his outspoken nature.

The Kogi West lawmaker has become the darling of most journalists who anticipate his comments on the floor of the Senate.

“You cannot interview Senator Dino Melaye and not get a story. It is not possible! In fact, Dino gives you more than you ask. One question and you already have three stories,” a colleague once told me.

I did not understand this until I started reporting the activities of lawmakers at the National Assembly.

Loved by many, Senator Melaye also has so many ‘haters’.

The lawmaker is ‘hated’ by many for his unreserved comments on certain issues.

Others just cannot stand his guts.

Despite Senator Melaye's "closeness to God" and prayers for his followers on Twitter, some people (call them haters) believe “Senator Melaye acts under some form of influence”.

So, we had our eyes and ears on the ground.

What appears to be a hint, Senator Melaye let the cat out of the bag at plenary on Thursday, November 2, 2017.

Here's how it all went down.

After the consideration of bills, it was time for lawmakers to consider the report of the Senate committees on the 2017 budget of corporations and agencies of government.

Deputy Senate leader, Bala Ibn Na’Allah had called for the report of the committee on Trade and Investment.

Senator Yusuf Abubakar Yusuf representing Taraba Central presented the report of the committee.

Senate President Bukola Saraki called for comments and observations on the report.

Senator Melaye was called upon to make comments on the report of the committee on Trade and Investment.

“In line with the diversification move of the federal government, this bill could not have come at a better time,” Melaye announced.

“If you go to the tea and coffee section in most supermarkets in Nigerian, especially in Abuja, you find out that…,” Melaye continued.

Everyone in the chamber was stunned.

At this point that his colleagues whispered to him that they had gone pass the tea and coffee bill.

It was at this moment he knew he had messed up.

Even Senate President could not hold back the laugh.

Senators at the chamber made jest of Melaye with some asking if the Ajeku Iya crooner "was addicted to coffee and tea."

At the Senate Press Centre, journalists made jokes of the Kogi lawmaker’s absent-mindedness at plenary.

Some wondered if Senator Melaye was craving a hot cup of tea or coffee at the time.

When next the lawmaker raised his hand for comments on the next report, the Senate president had to throw a reminder.

“Err, Senator Dino, we’re on information and communication technology,” Saraki said.

As lawmakers laughed, Melaye replied: “Mr President, I had already programmed my brain on information and communication technology.”

Asides his fleet of cars, you know something else Senator Melaye is 'addicted'  to -- tea and coffee.

Yeah, you heard it here first.
