I have had difficulty trying to understand the concept of greed, the nights can bear witness to my sleeplessness in a bid to properly define this indisposable natural occurence in man. In trying to understand how greed can be used as a motivation and push in a world such as ours, I have come up with the following resolutions based on analogies drawn from our environment, which is a factor to be considered in man's shaping of his virtues and behavioral pattern. The environment gives the individual a chance to be part of the norms already in existence or the opportunity to rebel thereby developing a counter norm. It is this same environmental factors that conditions the mind to adapt to certain circumstances, giving an opportunity to use the immediate for the betterment of set goals.
Greed, in time past, have been classified as a terrible behavior and nature that should be cautiously fought against. It has always been a subject of discuss that every child, growing up, encounters from a tender age. Religiously it has also been tagged as a negetive behavior. Do not get me wrong I am not saying it is good. The purpose of this article is to see how greed can be channelled into positivity.
The lion has a ritual of mapping out territories. These territories becomes a responsibility of the head of the park to control and protect. This does not mean the lion is not ambitious. It is, but it understands that greed, when used properly, can result into success. Greed has been defined as the Hunger for more power, wealth, etc than a person needs. The territory mapped by a lion is usually large and it is more than what is needed but not beyound its control. Wealth and power when ammased in controllable amounts becomes success. The most successful men in our capitalist society have more money that they can spend and they are still in search of more. It is said that if Bill Gates should stop working now, his fourth generation will still have an inheritance, should it now be said of him as greedy? In Christianity, it is a belief that a good father leaves an inheritance for his children. How does this happen without having more than what is needed? The human nature does not agree with satisfaction. The constant need of man for more, leading to an insatiable personality, is considered healthy for survival.
The condition of the mind not to have what is not needed, reduces the ability of an individual. The fight against greed should not be. Instead ways of channelling this nature into positivity is what should be taught at young ages. The world is driven by the need for more than is required. Only those with the right weapon of the mind and the right amount of greed can be said to be successful. Success is not having enough for the moment but having enough for eventualities.
In conclusion, the healthy mind is one that looks for more ways than one to ensure survival. Having more than you need is not a bad thing but having more than you can handle and control.
