Governor Ambode seems to believe that this is the case. Do you agree?
Lagos state governor, Akinwunmi Ambode, has shared an interesting theory on the role of religious leaders in politics.
Vanguard reports that he seems to hold Men of God responsible for the high level of corruption among politicians.
In his words, “When church and mosque want to do fundraising they will not look for people that are committed to the work of God but rather politicians and people in power whose salary is not up to N500,000 to come and launch N50 million project.
“These same politicians and people in power, when they came to church late, Pastor will ask the congregation to stand up and clap for them whereas the poor person that came early to church nobody recognizes him or her.”
Ambode made his observation at the annual public lecture organized by Christian Conscience, where he was represented Commissioner for Home Affairs, Dr Abdul-hakeem Abdul-Lateef.

Ambode is not the only with this opinion
The governor was supported by other speakers including the Special guest lecturer, Prof. Dapo Asaju, who added that religion has become commercialized by some religious leaders.
Former Minister for Education and Convener of Bring Back Our Girls, BBOG, campaign, Dr Oby Ezekwesili, also offered her opinion saying, said, “The church which is meant to be the salt of healing has failed and this is worrisome.
“We are all comfortable with corruption. There is need to consider reducing opportunities for corruption because battling corruption goes beyond Christian belief. We should enforce prosecution and sanction of bad behaviours to serve as a deterrent for other evil doers.”
The event was themed: “Religion and Corruption: Strategic Direction in Fighting Corruption in Nigeria.”
Ambode’s comments come after German evangelist, Reinhard Bonnke has also spoken about corruption.
He called it this country’s greatest enemy.
Do you agree with these statements?
