Okay so I didn't want to write about this until I have all the details involved, well as of now I think I've got alot, so lemme share with you.
So there's been wide rejection of the newly increased charges in the University of Benin, from Hostel fees, to school fees and several other fees been paid by students. Most of the hikes have been considered damn right outrageous by students and parents alike, as most of these price hikes ranges from 100% to 150% increase, also factoring the abrupt nature it was introduced and without prior notice, it's safe to say alot of parents and wards were not happy with this.
Anyways, following this increase, the students Union Government (SUG) of Uniben, decided to embark on a peaceful protest alongside some students. So apparently, the school management were not happy with this, and they showed it. A few hours after the protest, The Uniben school Senate, immediately ordered that students vacate the school premises and hostels within less than 2 hours. The information was passed down to the students by the Uniben PRO as around 4pm instructing students to leave before 6pm on the same day (Thursday, November 23, 2017). According to the notice from the PRO'S office, all activities have been suspended in the school and the school has been indefinitely shot down to further notice.
Uniben security Agents threatened to involve the Nigerian police force and employ the use of tear gas if the students failed to vacate the school premises before 6pm as they have instructed.
Alot of Uniben students have refused to adhere to this instruction, as they stand on the ground that this was too abrupt and they couldn't possibly start looking for means to travel back to their respective homes, most of which requires tiring hours of journey.
As of the time of writing this(6:30am, Friday, 24th November 2017), the school's hostel porters are still trying to get the students to vacate the Halls of residence. The students are still patiently waiting to see how all of these will play out.
