Varsity Crises: Nigerian Universities in another crisis as SSANU begins strike today

UNILAG Senate House

JAC believes it was shortchanged in the sharing formula used in allocating the funds between ASUU members and the unions under its umbrella.

Barely two month after the Academic Staff Union of Universities called off its indefinite nationwide strike, Nigerian universities are in another round of crisis.

The Joint Action Committee, JAC comprising of Senior Staff  Association of Nigerian Universities, SSANU, Non-Academic Staff Union, NASU and National Association of Academic Technologists, NAAT has directed its members in all universities across the country to resume their suspended strike.

In a letter to all branch Chairmen titled: “Directives to immediately resume the suspended strike” was signed by the three unions under JAC.

The union stated in the letter that the strike was necessitated because Federal Government did not clarify the criteria for the disbursement of the N23 billion it approved for the universities to settle earned allowances arrears in October.

JAC believes it was shortchanged in the sharing formula used in allocating the funds between ASUU members and the unions under its umbrella.

Complaining about the sharing formula, the union said that about  N15.10 billion was allocated to ASUU,  while about N7.929 billion was allocated to the non-teaching staff unions comprising SSANU, NAAT and NASU.

The letter reads in part:

“In the said letter, the Federal Government was given seven (7) days to explain the criteria for the said allocation and do the needful. The deadline has elapsed without any response from the Federal Government of Nigeria.

“In view of the above, therefore, you are hereby directed to resume the suspended indefinite strike action as from 12 midnight, Sunday, December 3, 2017. During this period, the strike shall be total and comprehensive.

“Further to this,  all our branches are to convene a congress  of Joint Action Committee by 8:00 am on Monday,  December  4, 2017, to commence the strike immediately.”

The three union group have however commenced their industrial action and universities across the country have been thrown into another round of crisis again.
