Flamingos: Nigeria's U-17 women fail to qualify for World Cup

Nigeria will not be at the FIFA Women's U-17 World Cup for the first time since its inception

Nigeria's U-17 Women football team have failed to qualify for the FIFA Women's U-17 World Cup.

Nigeria's U-17 side also known as the Flamingos played out a 1 - 1 draw with Cameroon in the second leg tie of the World Cup qualification match.

The Flamingos had earlier drawn their first leg match against Cameroon 2 -2 in Benin City.

The Flamingos knew they had to win in Cameroon to progress to the U-17 Women's World Cup, and maintain their record of participating at every edition of the Under 17 tournament.

However, Bala Nikyu's side fell behind via a goal by Alice Kameni in the 16th minute, which meant the Flamingos had to score at least two goals to qualify, but the Cameroonians held on for a half time lead.

The Flamingos equalised in the 82nd minute through Precious Martha, but it was not enough as the Cameroonians held on to qualify on away goals.

The draw means for the first time Nigeria failed to win any of its qualifying games for the U-17 World Cup, also the result means that Nigeria will not be at the FIFA Women's U-17 World Cup for the first time since its inception.

 

The Flamingos have failed to emulate the Falconets who picked of one of Africa's two tickets to the FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup.

The three representatives from Africa are South Africa, Ghana and Cameroon.

The FIFA Women's U-17 World Cup is scheduled to hold in Uruguay from Tuesday, November 13 to Saturday, December 1, 2018
