Magu: EFCC boss appears before reps over funds recovered in 2017

EFCC condemns attack on Magu’s home, says anti-corruption fight won’t stop

Magu's days as the EFCC boss may be numbered following a recent court ruling which says the Senate has the power to reject him.

The Acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Ibrahim Magu, is said to be addressing  members of the House of Representatives Committee on Financial Crimes.

According Punch, the EFCC boss is currently briefing the lawmakers on recoveries made by the agency in 2017.

The committee is chaired by a member from Ogun State, Kayode Oladele.

Senate vs Magu

Magu is still having a running battle with the Senate as a Federal High Court, last week, ruled that the Upper chamber has the power to confirm or reject him as the substantive chairman of the Commission.

The Senate had rejected Magu's confirmation twice based on a report by the Department of State Service (DSS) which declared him unfit for the job.

President Muhammadu Buhari also refused to remove Magu despite the Senate's insistence that the EFCC boss must be sacked.

In protest, the senate decided it would not confirm any candidate brought forward by the presidency for senate approval until Magu is removed.

While President Buhari was on medical leave, a statement credited Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, who was the acting president at the time, said that it is not constitutionally required that the Senate confirms Magu, adding that the Presidency's approval suffices.

The matter was later dragged to the court, where judgement was delivered in favour of the Senate.
