University of Benin: UNIBEN recalls suspended students, strips them of their offices

Suspended students explain why they rejected VC's recall offer

Another conflict might develop between UNIBEN management and the suspended students as school authorities deny them their political offices after recall.

The University of Benin has finally recalled five students union members it suspended in December 2017 for planning to disrupt convocation of the university.

The Vice-Chancellor of the University, Prof Faraday Orumwunse made this known on Tuesday, February 13 in Benin.

Orumwunse said the students were recalled after their appeal as well as the intervention of well-meaning stakeholders.

The VC also said that the protest that led to the students' suspension was uncalled for saying it was designed only to serve the illegitimate purpose of portraying the university in bad light.

Recall that the suspended five students rejected the Vice Chancellor's recall offer.

The student while speaking to Pulse on why they rejected the offer said they rejected the management conditional offer to recall them because they were not guilty of what the management accused them of.

''They rusticated us and since they made the decision, there has been clamour that we should be reinstated, it was at this point that the management said that before they reinstate us we have to apologise and we told them that we cannot apologize, because if we apologise it means we have done something wrong and by implication it means we are guilty of whatever they accuse us of'"

Management denies suspended students their political office

However, following the news of their recall in the media, another disagreement is likely to brew between the management and the five student.

Speaking to Pulse about the recall, the student union leader, Ogbidi Osamudiamen said the management recalled them only to strip them of their political positions in the university.

Ogbidi said the student union will not accept this development because they were elected by the students union constitution which he said the management has no control or authority over.
