Affected individuals and groups are advised to turn in their weapons before the stipulated date to avoid punishment.
The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Ibrahim Idris, has ordered all state Commissioners of Police in the country to commence the recovery of prohibited firearms, ammunition and weapons from unauthorised individuals and groups before March 15, 2018.
This was disclosed by the Jigawa State Commissioner of Police, Bala Zam, who issued a statement about the ultimatum on Wednesday, March 7.
According to him, the IGP is eager to oversee the disarming of "all militias, bandits and vigilante groups" who pose a threat to law and order in the country.
The statement advised affected individuals and groups to turn in their weapons before the stipulated date to avoid punishment.
Zam said, "The IGP, Ibrahim Idris, directed all Commissioners of Police nationwide to immediately commence the disarmament and recovery of prohibited firearms, ammunition and weapons in possessions of all militias, bandits and vigilante groups.
"Therefore, members of the public, individuals and groups, under any guise other than statutory security agencies recognised by law of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to bear firearms of specified category, are hereby warned.
"They are given up to 15th of March, 2018 to surrender them to the Commissioner of Police.
"For avoidance of doubt, the Robbery and Firearms Act cap R11 LFN 2004 and Firearms Act cap F28 LFN 2004 are explicit on punishment for dealing in arms and ammunition."
Zama revealed that Jigawa has already formed a committee to execute the exercise which would include cordon and search, raid, seizure from premises and hideouts across the state.
