Kiri Kiri Prison: UK to pay Nigeria N336m to build new wing

This means that eligible Nigerian inmates serving time in the UK will be able to return home to complete their sentences.

United Kingdom Foreign Secretary, Boris Johnson, has revealed that his government will pay the Nigerian government the sum of N336 million (£700,000) for a new wing in Kirikiri Maximum Security Prison, Lagos.

According to a report by the BBC, Johnson noted that the 112-bed annex will help both governments to expedite the transfer of Nigerian offenders from British jails back to the country.

In a statement written to Parliament, Johnson said, "The provision of this assistance is in line with the government's security and stability objectives in West Africa."

 

The annex will be paid for out of the UK government's Conflict, Stability and Security Fund, which provides development and security support to countries which are at risk of conflict or instability.

The building of the annex is part of the prisoner transfer agreement signed between both governments in 2014 which means citizens of one who commit crimes in the other will serve sentences in their homeland.

This means that eligible Nigerian inmates serving time in the UK will be able to return home to complete their sentences.
