Shocking Revelation: How Lagos business mogul survived Type 2 Diabetes diagnosis

How Lagos business mogul survived Type 2 Diabetes diagnosis

If I could survive Type 2 Diabetes, I am sure anyone with this life-threatening health issue can also survive it without getting into debt over insulin injections

“If I could survive Type 2 Diabetes, I am sure anyone with this life-threatening health issue can also survive it without getting into debt over insulin injections and other medications prescribed which did not even help me much. Information gives power and this is what helped me which is why I asked that it be shared “– Chief Badmus, Lagos based multi-millionaire industrialist

That Saturday evening was one I would remember for a long time to come for many reasons. As I gently swayed to the crooning of the life band, I felt life was sweetest at this moment and should never stop. I swirled the wine slowly in the glass cup I held deftly in my hand and though I was beginning to feel tipsy, I toyed with the idea of taking more as I enjoyed the way the wine slid down my throat at each sip.

For a long time now, I had not seen such a colourful gathering of people. Great politicians who I only saw in the dailies all graced the occasion and perched by their sides were their flamboyant wives or female escorts. The air was heavily scented with the use of different expensive perfumes. There was an open show of opulence as each big person tried to outdo the other with the spraying of fresh mint around.

I was all alone at my table because I wanted it so and just as I looked at the bottle of wine again, not sure what I should do, one of the pretty girls that were serving foods and drinks sidled close to me and bent double across the table in an effort to make me hear her voice over the music. Her pretty face struck me but more so what she was revealing across her chest. I am not sure for how long I stared but by the time I looked up, I saw a mischievous smile play across her lips and I also smiled back knowingly. Several thoughts of what should be my next line of action raced through my mind before Chief Badmus broke into my reverie with a gentle cough.

With a slight wave of his hand, he dismissed the guards that were tailing him around. They got the sign and moved a couple of poles away. The pretty-faced girl moved away almost as silently as she had come, disappointment written all over her face. The drastic change that had come over him in recent past was near miracle and obviously his way of showing gratitude to his maker was with this social gathering graced by the crème de la crème in the Lagos metropolis. Like I knew he would, he asked me if I needed anything but I already had more than I could possibly handle. With so much food and the best of drinks going around, I had watched earlier as Chief Badmus gobbled down fruit salad and I could not resist asking him why he was not trying any of the delicacies around.

It was at this time Chief Badmus shared his experience with me. The party in actual fact was not just to celebrate his new age but a lease of new life as he had a close shave with death when he was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes.

A close ally of my late father but in his usual friendly manner, he soon had his arm around me and asked me up on my feet as he steered me to a balustrade where he was sure there was less noise and like two long lost friends we started talking.

“I would never believe I could ever be struck with any ailment that would not be easily taken care of considering I never joked with my health and I have my personal medical doctor who was more than adequately paid to look after my health concerns. When the signs started, I thought it could be no more than stress as I was handling a huge project at the time that demanded much of my time and money

“At this time, I was urinating more frequently and I also began to lose weight. The surprising thing was that I was usually thirsty and hungry too no matter how much I ate. Then one night, my wife a very finicky woman raised an alarm and literally forced me to consult with another medical practitioner. She visited the toilet about 30 minutes after I used it and found ants milling around the water closet”.

“While in the office of the Chief Medical Director of a private hospital the following morning, results of tests I had taken were brought in. His face was creased at the fore-head and his lips turned down at the corners to form a deep frown that really scared me as I could tell something was wrong. Then we started talking”;

Doctor: Based on what you have narrated as your symptoms and the outcome of our investigations, I would like to ask you the following questions:

Chief Badmus: Okay, go ahead Doctor

Doctor: Do you have a family history of diabetes?

Mr A: Not really, but I think my uncle had it at a time before he died

Doctor: Based on your laboratory result that is right in front of me now, your fasting blood glucose level is elevated and your urine glucose result is also positive. Your 2 hours postprandial result is also out of range and according to WHO guidelines, this is a clear picture of no other thing but Type 2 diabetes. There is no cause to be afraid, because there are drugs that will help you manage it effectively

Chief Badmus: Thank you Doctor since there are drugs that can CURE it.

Doctor: I never said there are drugs that can CURE it. I said there are drugs to MANAGE it.

Chief Badmus: Doctor, are you therefore telling me that this condition is INCURABLE?

Doctor: Diabetes is a metabolic disorder that happens when your body cannot produce enough insulin to help with your glucose movement into the body cells where it is needed. You will initially have to be placed on artificial insulin injection now and then compliment that with drugs that you must regularly take.
Beyond that, there are certain things you can't afford to eat again as before...

Chief Badmus: Oh my God!!!

Doctor: There is really nothing to be scared of but I must warn you that immediate treatment must commence otherwise there would be complications. The situation is life-threatening already and most people at this stage suffer stroke, erectile dysfunction, a loss of any of their limbs through amputation and even death.

I needed no further prompting as I knew all he said was true. My wife had been complaining seriously about my lack-lustre sex performance and it was just all I could do to save my marriage”.

I was immediately placed on insulin injection therapy and if not because I am a business man with means above an average man, I would not have survived it. I spent millions of naira and after 10 months, it looked as though I would never get over it. My health had badly deteriorated and my business began to suffer. News from the rumour mills soon filtered in and people were already speculating I did rituals to make my money. It was almost clear what was going to happen but things were about to change when my wife’s younger sister paid us an unscheduled visit at our home where I was bedridden. She was shocked I had been going through all these and she was not informed. A trained botanist and nutritionist, she believed so much in the efficacies of veggies, fruits and holistic approach to ailing health”.

After following her instructions fastidiously for 5 weeks, life began to return into my body. At her advice, I bought a glucometer with which I was monitoring my blood sugar level by myself at home and 2 whole months after setting out to adhere to her diet plans, instructions and a carefully modified lifestyle, I had my type 2 diabetes completely reversed. I have taken series of tests to confirm my glucose level.  So today, I am not only celebrating my birthday but I am also celebrating life. I have supported my in-law to compile the information in a useful form for as many people that may find themselves with this health challenge and also the distribution of glucometers to some of these people. I choose carefully now what I eat because life is more precious than all these stuff floating around”, making reference to the foods and drinks that were served.

When Chief Badmus was through with his story, I felt like puking. I remember all that I had eaten and began to think they would do me more harm than good.

For the greater good, Chief Badmus shared the link where his in-law is working on the project of sensitizing and helping people suffering with diabetes and how they can have their diabetes reversed completely without the attendant costs of the medications in the hospital.
