Super Eagles: Nigeria’s national team, Coach Rohr grab CAF nominations

The winner of the awards will be announced at the Awards Gala which will hold on January 4 in Accra.

The Super Eagles of Nigeria and Coach Gernot Rohr have been nominated for the Confederation of African Football (CAF) National Team of the Year and Coach of the Year awards.

The nominations were announced by CAF on Monday, November 27.

For the National Team of the Year, the Super Eagles have been nominated alongside Cameroon, Egypt, Mali U-17 and Zambia U-20.

 

The winner of the awards will be announced at the Awards Gala which will hold on Thursday, January 4 in Accra, Ghana.

Super Eagles in 2017

In the year under review, the Super Eagles of Nigeria were impressive in the 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign, finishing top of a tough Group B that has Zambia, Cameroon and Algeria.

In competitive games, the Super Eagles beat Cameroon and Zambia and also grabbed draws away at Cameroon and Algeria to become to the first African country to qualify for the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

The Indomitable Lions of Cameroon in 2017 shocked the continent to win the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title.

 

It was Egypt who lost to Cameroon in the 2017 AFCON final but bounced back to reach their first FIFA World Cup in 27 years.

Mali U-17 boys in 2017 won the Africa U-17 Cup of Nations title and impressed at the FIFA U-17 World Cup where they went out in the semi-final after losing in controversial circumstances to Spain.

 

Zambia U-20 won the 2017 Africa U-20 Cup of Nations title and got to the quarter-finals of the FIFA U-20 World Cup.

Rohr for Coach of the Year

For Coach of the Year, Rohr is competing with Hector Cuper (Egypt) and Hugo Broos (Cameroon).

Wydad Athletic Club coach L'Hussein Amoutta has also been included after leading the Moroccan side to their first CAF Champions League title in 25 years.

Mihayo Kazemb is the final nominee after TP Mazembe to two consecutive CAF Confederations Cup titles.

The winners will be decided by votes from the members of the CAF Technical & Development Committee, CAF Media Experts Panel and Independent Media and TV Consultants.
